usflagWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A soldier from Wichita who died in Afghanistan was remembered as a true American hero who joined the military in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Army Sgt. Eric Nettleton was killed last week while he was on foot patrol when an improvised explosive device exploded. The 26-year-old Nettleton was remembered Sunday by his family at All Saints Catholic Church in Wichita.

His wife, Ashley, says she wanted people to remember and honor all the soldiers serving overseas.

Nettleton grew up in Wichita and graduated from Wichita West in 2003. He had been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and served with the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment from June until his death.

The Wichita Eagle reports that funeral arrangements are pending.
